Case study: Fishing safely in Liberia
‘Sometimes I go very far to sea. I spend a lot of time out there. There is nothing there.’ James, Liberia
James fishes day in and day out, often through the night, to provide enough food for his family, but the sea can be dangerous. When a storm engulfs the men in their homemade canoes the waves can push them overboard. Many fishermen have lost their lives this way.
To provide for his family and fish safely, James joined a fishing project run by CAFOD’s local fishing experts. He received safety training and specialised equipment like the GPS and lifejackets.
Now, his family is thriving. James uses the GPS to find fish and to safely navigate back to land when he’s blown off course. He can fish in the knowledge that he’ll come back safely with an even bigger catch!
