Case study: Outreach team in Guarjila
“Patients don’t have to go to the city to see the doctor. They can have their problems treated here.” Dr Dagoberto Menjívar, El Salvador
During the civil war in El Salvador, the community of Guarjila was cut off from the rest of the country. To receive essential healthcare, the villagers decided to set up their own clinic themselves. CAFOD is providing funding for the clinic so it can offer specialist medical support, including gynaecology, paediatric care, nutrition and counselling.
This gift supports clinics like Guarjila's with a medical team who can help people with common health conditions, as well as emergency patients. It can transform a community, as Head Doctor Dagoberto Menjívar, who took this photo of his staff at the clinic explains: "Our vaccination programme is reaching more people, particularly for tetanus. Women are now going to hospital to give birth and feel better prepared to care for their children."
