Case study: Outreach team in Guarjila
"This gift will help CAFOD funded medical outreach teams to respond quickly to other emergencies." Laura Purves, Emergency Response Team, CAFOD
During El Salvador’s civil war in the 1980s, the community of Guarjila fled to refugee camps in Honduras. When they returned home, there were no accessible healthcare services, so the villagers decided to set up a clinic to provide essential healthcare. CAFOD helped train some of the young women – who had returned as refugees – to become community health workers.
Today, CAFOD helps to keep the clinic strong through valuable outreach work, such as health education, nutritional advice, preparation of simple basic remedies and use of medicinal plants – all with a focus on supporting mothers and babies.
Nurse Marlene works at the clinic. She said: "First, thank you very much for all the support CAFOD gives to our project. It is very important in these difficult times with the COVID-19 pandemic. Greetings from our community, and a big hug. May Monsignor Romero take care of us."
