Case study: Shelter in the wake of conflict in DRC
‘Thousands of internally displaced families are fleeing the war, leaving all of their belongings behind. There is an urgent need to provide emergency shelter to alleviate the suffering of those living in temporary camps.’ Olivia, Emergency Response Team Goma
Baruta, his wife Bora and their eight children have fled conflict in eastern DRC and sought refuge in a temporary camp. It took them two days to reach the camp and they slept under the trees without blankets or mattresses, and had little food on their journey.
The camp they arrived at was overcrowded and lacked safe drinking water or suitable toilets. During the rainy season, the family was also exposed to bad weather, especially since they were living in very basic shelters. They were hungry and risked malnutrition.
Thanks to a local organisation supported by CAFOD, Baruta and his family accessed blankets and mattresses to sleep on, food baskets containing maize flour, beans, rice, salt and cooking oil, as well as fast-growing crops that can be planted and harvested in just three weeks’ time. The family also received cash which can be used to purchase essential tools and materials to help them survive.
This charity gift can give hope to families whose lives have been turned upside down – with homes destroyed, livelihoods lost, and communities torn apart. It will mean we are ready to make a life-changing difference to a family during an emergency.
