Case study: Keeping family homes heated in Ukraine
‘We just came to the village office, there were some kind people. They called around and said, ‘There’s a house.’ Maria, Ukraine
Maria, Stephen and their four children have sadly been displaced more than once. In 2022, they were forced to move for the second time due to the conflict in Ukraine and, with nowhere to go, they chose a village at random.
When they arrived, the community came together to support their family by finding them a house and helping them plant potatoes. However, winter was fast approaching, and the extreme cold was becoming a reality for the family who couldn’t afford firewood.
As the snow fell thick around their home, Maria’s family reached out to CAFOD’s local church organisation who provided them with essential firewood to heat their house, provide light and cook hot meals.
This gift can support other families like Maria’s who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and who now face extreme winters.
