Case study: Farkondeh’s thriving tailoring business

'I previously believed that people couldn’t learn something new in adulthood. But the last two years of my life have proved that this is not true.’ – Farkondeh*, Afghanistan

Conflict, drought and COVID-19 have caused displacement, unemployment and food insecurity for women and girls across Afghanistan. Farkondeh* has first-hand experience of these challenges. She is the only worker in her family of nine.

Thanks to CAFOD’s local partner, Farkondeh started learning to tailor, weave and embroider clothes with a group of women of all different ages. After six months of hard work, she learnt tailoring and was also given a start-up kit containing fabric and yarn. This allowed her to start her own business to boost her income and look after her family.

She says ‘Now, not only am I tailoring, but I have also taught my two daughters. I used my income to buy my daughters two sewing machines and together we are sewing clothes for local people, as well as for a nearby market.’
