Monica grew up in the favelas on the outskirts of São Paulo, in overcrowded housing with no basic infrastructure. When she and her family moved to the city centre in search of work, they couldn’t find anywhere affordable to live. They moved into an abandoned hotel and then faced eviction by the local government.
That’s when they found Semeando, a CAFOD-funded local partner that helped Monica understand her rights to a safe home. She didn’t just learn, she campaigned.
Monica and her neighbours organised, spoke out, and pushed for change. Eventually, they secured government funding to convert the hotel into sustainable social housing for over 176 families. Their new home has green spaces, recycling points, and the kind of dignity that Monica had always hoped for.
