Floating gardens (for schools)
“I feel at peace when the harvest comes.” – Bayezid, Bangladesh
A garden that grows with the water. This gift can help families in Bangladesh build floating gardens, so they can grow food and earn a living even when the land floods.
Sixteen-year-old Bayezid lives with his family in Choto Bashail, Bangladesh. Since he was little, he has helped his family plant and grow vegetables on their floating garden. His favourite is bottle gourd, which his parents grow. “I love eating vegetables, but among all vegetables, bottle gourd is my favourite!”
Climate change is making it harder for families to grow enough food. Too little rain can leave crops without water, while too much can flood the land. With CAFOD’s help, local experts are working with more families in Bangladesh to build floating gardens from locally grown hyacinth plants, helping them grow crops despite the floods.
Bayezid enjoys working on the gardens because “it has to be done in harmony with nature”. Having seen the harm climate change can do, he wants us all to look after our environment.
For his family, the floating garden means food to eat and vegetables to sell, with money left over for the things they need. “The floating garden is very important for us,” says Bayezid.
