Case study: Empowering women refugees in Lebanon
‘I’m learning hairdressing because I love this field and I hope that one day I can return to Palestine and open my own shop.’ Hiba, Palestinian refugee
Hiba is a Palestinian refugee living in a refugee camp located in the suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon. Hiba wanted to find a job to help her husband support their family but job opportunities for women are hard to come by in the refugee camp, and Palestinians are forbidden from working in certain professions outside the camp.
With support from local partners working with CAFOD, Hiba was able to join a women’s group. The group took part in vocational training in beauty therapy and hairdressing.
Completing the training helps Hiba and other women refugees find better job opportunities in the camps. Hiba dreams of returning home to Palestine and being a successful businesswoman by opening her own beauty salon.
