Case study: Protecting the Amazon rainforest in Brazil
"We, Yanomami young people, we really enjoy learning how to use drones. So, for me it's incredible." Cláudio, Brazilian Amazon
In the Brazilian Amazon, Cláudio* and his community are capturing footage of the deforestation caused by illegal mining.
Large parts of the rainforest and rivers are being destroyed by the illegal mining, whilst numerous rights of the indigenous population are being violated. To tackle this issue, CAFOD works with a local organisation that trains young people to protect our common home using new technologies.
Young indigenous leaders like Cláudio in the Brazilian Amazon have learnt how to fly drones to record deforestation caused by illegal mining. The footage captured informs reports sent to local, state and national authorities to demand that action is taken to prevent further loss and restore the rainforest and the health of its inhabitants.
The footage captured by Cláudio and his community is essential in our fight to protect the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous communities that take care of it.
