Why buy this Remarkable radio gift?
- Speak up for justice! A radio means that indigenous people living in remote areas are aware of their rights, helping them to protect their communities and the land they live on.
- Use your voice! Radios help community members and defenders to raise awareness and spread encouragement to others who are protecting our common home from deforestation and exploitation.
- Tune in! Every person who hears a hopeful message of advice can pass this advice on to their friends and family, keeping even more people safe and in-the-know.
Case study: Defending human rights via the radio waves in Honduras
'Through this radio, communities are able to share their struggles, their joys and their hopes for changing their situations.' Iolany, Honduras
Iolany lives in Honduras and works for Radio Progreso, a radio station run by a CAFOD-supported local organisation. For many remote communities, radio is a vital tool of communication.
During the last decade there has been a significant increase in the number of human rights defenders who have been killed or imprisoned in Honduras for defending their rights and the environment. Radio Progreso supports and protects human right defenders who are at risk across the country.
Iolany told us: 'Radio Progreso has made it possible for indigenous communities to raise awareness of the problems they are facing in their regions, especially those linked to the extractive industry and forced evictions – and even murder.'
