Case study: Promoting lasting peace in Lebanon
‘I believe in people and their power to change things for the better.’ Sally, Syrian refugee
Sally was an Architecture student in Damascus before the war. Once the conflict broke out in Syria, she was forced to flee to Lebanon. She received support in Lebanon, but her accommodation had no heating apart from one small stove. After a year of living there, Sally learnt that a child refugee she knew had died because of the cold following a winter storm.
Sally was inspired to take action and started visiting a nearby refugee camp to see how she could help. She collected money, distributed essential items to those in need and taught children Arabic and English. She started working with CAFOD’s local partner who tackles discrimination and the lack of basic human rights for refugees who come from varied backgrounds.
Sally now works with communities, organising activities promoting peace. The communities come together for workshops and plan local initiatives to build relationships and improve refugees’ and local communities’ quality of life.
