Case study: Affordable and sustainable housing in São Paulo, Brazil
‘I had the key to my apartment, and I was so excited. I wanted to shout in the street, I was overjoyed!’ Monica, Brazil
Monica lives in São Paulo, Brazil, with her husband and daughter. She grew up in the favelas on the outskirts of the city, in overcrowded housing that lacked basic infrastructure, but moved with her husband to the city centre in search of better employment.
Unable to find affordable housing, they moved into an abandoned hotel but were at risk of eviction by the local government. That’s when they started working with CAFOD-funded local partner Semeando, to learn about their rights to a safe home.
Monica said: ‘When I came here, my life completely changed. Living here has offered me greater opportunities to work and study.’
Monica campaigned with Semeando against eviction and eventually secured government funding to convert the hotel into sustainable social housing for over 176 families! Their new home will include green spaces and recycling points.
