Case study: Inspiring underprivileged children with hydroponics in northern Israel
‘The first time I took the harvest to the restaurant some kids and parents joined me, and you have never seen such joyful faces.’ Nijme, Israel
Nijme is a teacher in Israel working with Palestinian children, citizens of Israel, with language delays. In her teaching approach, she always tries to encourage her students to explore practical and sustainable ecology.
Alongside other local women, she signed up to join a project run by CAFOD’s local partner which provided training and subsidised equipment for growing vegetables using hydroponics. Nijme applied this newly learnt skill and built the system at her school with the help of her students, parents, and their local community.
Nijme and the other training participants have formed a growers’ group. They keep in touch swapping tips and advice and even started selling their produce to a local restaurant. Everyone who visits Nijme’s classroom leaves fired up with enthusiasm for hydroponics.
