Case study: Starting a business in Ethiopia
‘I’m now satisfied I can provide for my family, even making enough money to send my grandchildren to school.’ -Yenenesh, Ethiopia
Yenenesh is 70 years old, has seven children and lives with two of her grandchildren in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Yenenesh financially supported her whole family by selling injera (Ethiopian sour bread). During the hardest times, she would be forced to get loans from loan sharks.
Thanks to support from CAFOD’s partner, Yenenesh received a loan and business training to launch her injera-making business and was so successful that soon her loan was paid off.
She has since been able to diversify her business and start selling profitable firewood, providing a more stable income for her large family. Yenenesh is planning to pass her business and legacy down to her children and grandchildren.
