Cash for winter in Afghanistan
Omar* lives in Daikundi province in Afghanistan with his family of eight. Daikundi region often gets cut off from the rest of the world during winter due to avalanches, landslides and flooding. Drought has also had a devastating impact on farmland, leaving Omar unemployed for most of the year.
He told us: ‘Life has been tough with the droughts this year. Some days we have been left no choice but to eat grass. This has left my son and wife sick.'
Thankfully, CAFOD-funded local experts have been able to distribute cash to the struggling families. The cash assistance programme allows families to purchase essentials like blankets, warm clothing, fuel and food for winter.
Omar told us: ‘With the first round of cash assistance I bought essentials for our home like wood, gas, heaters and blankets for my family to use. This purchase made me feel safe knowing we will be ready for the next winter.’
