Case study: Rohingya families seek refuge

"Our partner Caritas Bangladesh is on the ground to provide emergency aid for these refugees, who are arriving hungry, weak and sick." Janet Symes, CAFOD Head of Region for Asia and the Middle East

Over 500,000 people are estimated to have fled into Bangladesh to escape violence in neighbouring Myanmar. Many of these refugees are sleeping in the open air and are in desperate need of food and water. Others are in makeshift refugee camps along the side of the road, or wherever they can find space.

Rajida had to walk to the border while heavily pregnant. She gave birth to her daughter in Bangladesh, under plastic sheeting in the middle of a rice paddy. “When I saw that she was healthy, I was so happy. I gave thanks to God.”

CAFOD are working through their partner, Caritas Bangladesh, to provide emergency shelter, urgently needed food and clean water for families like Rajida’s.

This gift will give hope to refugee families whose lives have been turned upside down. It will mean we are ready to make a life-changing difference to a family in great need during an emergency.
