Why buy this Build a greenhouse gift?

  • Gardeners and green-fingered folk willlove this unique gift.
  • The greenhouse protects plants from unpredictable weather conditions and allows a much greater range of veggies to be grown – including bell peppers, tomatoes and onions.
  • Growing their own vegetables means that families don't have to buy as much food. They can even sell their surplus veggies for extra cash.

Case study: Growing vegetables and self-esteem in Sierra Leone

I’m a wood seller no more. I now own a small business, am respected in the community and people applaud me when I talk in meetings.’ Yarie, Sierra Leone

Yarie, a young woman from Sierra Leone, lives with her grandmother and six other grandchildren. She is the oldest of them all and the breadwinner of the family. With no stable source of income, she was forced to sell firewood to sustain her family.

Thankfully, CAFOD-funded local experts KADDRO have set up a greenhouse farm to help young people find employment, providing them with a more reliable source of income to meet their household needs.

Yarie told us: ‘Before the project, having a stable source of income was my greatest challenge.’

The farm not only helps to provide young people with the skills and knowledge to set up and manage their own greenhouses but helps to build up their confidence and self-esteem.

‘Community recognition is probably what I’ve enjoyed the most,’ says Yarie. ‘The project has helped me to regain my self-esteem. I can say my life is now dignified. I think am living my dream.’
