Case study: How fish are helping Florence
"I can send my children to school now and I can feed all my family" Florence, Zambia
Florence is a single mother living in Northern Zambia. After her husband died, she struggled to make a living from her small farm and worried about feeding her two children. Despite waking early each morning and working all day on her land, Florence was only growing enough to survive.
But then, Florence began farming fish. “I was interested in fish farming because it’s a business that I knew would help me make a living. You can get fish to eat, but you can sell them as well” she told us. CAFOD provided tools and training so that Florence could build a pond and gave her 500 tiny fish to stock it.
Thanks to this gift and Florence’s hard work, the fish flourished. She can now sell some of the fish at a local market and with the money she earns, she can send her children to school. Florence has also shared her training and knowledge with her neighbours, so that they can farm fish too, and build a better future for themselves and their families.
