Supporting women facing violence in South Sudan

The Listening centre World Gift focuses on our work in Olame in the DRC. The centre provides a safe space for women affected by sexual violence to seek medical and psycho-social help as well as receiving training so they can start to earn an income. These safe spaces are essential when local communities often shun those affected, something the centre is trying to change.  In South Sudan, Monica is a psycho-social support group leader. The work our local partners have done with Monica and her women’s group is really important. They’re helping to fight stereotypes of a woman’s role in society and allow them a safe space to voice any problems they might be having:  “Women now have a forum where they can discuss things that matter to them.”  Recently, Monica spoke at a court...

Coronavirus awareness raising in South Sudan

“I thank God for giving me this opportunity to participate in this fight against COVID 19 pandemic through raising awareness via radio stations here in Juba”  Dr Thomas, South Sudan   Our Messages of hope World Gift focuses on information sharing via the use of a loudspeaker, but that’s not the only way that CAFOD helps our local experts to keep everyone informed. Local radio shows are a common way of sharing accurate information about critical situations such as staying safe from Covid-19 or Ebola. They allow a platform for local, trusted members of a community to voice the facts, dispel myths around a situation and help everyone to have an equal chance at survival.  In Juba, South Sudan, use of local radio shows to spread awareness on...

Celebrating Easter with World Gifts

It's been another strange Lent and seems set to be another strange Easter here in the UK. Thankfully, we seem on track to be in a better situation than we were last year: churches are open and many are still able to hold masses, many of us will be able to gather outside in small groups, and generally there is a stronger sense of hope. We know that we won't be able to celebrate Easter with as many of our loved ones as we would like to and, once again, we know there will be people celebrating alone. But we hope that there might be a World Gift which will brighten someone's day and just want to remind you that...

How the Health clinic helps mothers

The Guarjila health clinic has been providing essential healthcare to the remote community for years. CAFOD funding helps it to retain specialist services such as gynaecology, prenatal and paediatric care, nutrition and counselling.   We wanted to share some of the details with you, to show just what your World Gifts purchases can help fund! We were lucky enough to have access to interviews with some mothers who had visited the clinic during their pregnancy and for post-natal healthcare.   Lurvin is 30 years old and lives with her husband and two children. Originally from Honduras, Lurvin is particularly thankful for access to the clinic now that she lives in Guarjila. Talking about the healthcare you could receive in Honduras she said: ...

The Health Clinic and Coronavirus

The Health clinic is one of our most popular gifts from the higher price-range. With schools, parishes and individuals raising money to fund the running costs of a health clinic. The real-life example we give you is of the Guarjila clinic in rural El Salvador. During the civil war, the community of Guarjila was cut off from the rest of the country. To receive essential healthcare, the villagers decided to set up their own clinic themselves. Over the years, CAFOD has been funding them to be able to provide specialist healthcare, including gynaecology, prenatal and paediatric care, nutrition advice and counselling.  The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the stark inequality that people living in poverty face. Those without access to clean, safe...
