Charity emergency gifts
When disaster strikes, World Gifts from our Emergency, Conflict and Rehabilitation Fund can make a life-saving difference to families in urgent need. As well as providing essentials like water, food and shelter in the aftermath of an earthquake, hurricane or flood, CAFOD will also be there for the long term, supporting communities to get back on their feet after the crisis.
Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines on 8 November 2013, was one of the most powerful storms ever to hit land. It tore apart the lives of more than 14 million people, destroying homes, schools and roads, and leaving entire communities with no way of making a living.
In the year after the typhoon hit, CAFOD's work included distributing food, shelter kits and emergency supplies to thousands of families, ensuring that 50,000 people had access to clean water and sanitation in areas where pipelines had been destroyed and helping tens of thousands of people to make a living again, by providing seeds, tools, farming equipment and fishing boats, or by training people in new skills.
