In Uganda, drought and crop failures have led many people to leave their homes. In the northern and north-eastern parts of the country most people now live in temporary camps.
CAFOD partner, the Hoima Village Based Development Programme, is working with local farmers in the Hoima Diocese to improve their livelihoods by helping them to increase their productivity. One of the ways this is done is by providing them with pigs for breeding and selling.
The project has had a positive impact in many ways. Women who have taken part in the project have particularly benefited because they have gained confidence from being able to earn a living for themselves.
In the Philippines, Rufino Acosta is now able to send his son to school thanks to two piglets. By breeding the pigs to sell at market, he has made a good profit. What’s more, the pig dung makes great fertiliser and helps him grow more crops.
